RW@60:13 Chepstow - Goldcliff

By Dave Snowden  ·  June 28, 2014  ·  RW@60, Walks & Bike rides

Since completing Offa's Dyke Path over twelve days back in March I have somewhat neglected my walk around Wales.  I had planned to be on the Pembroke Coast in July but I first have to traverse the South Wales Coast.  I should have just got it done, but the attractions of Snowdonia for by actual birthday and too much work travel have made it difficult.   If I am honest I was not looking forward to the Chepstow to Cardiff section as its mostly industrial or plain flat with few features.   I had resolved to try and do it in two...

A meeting in Bangor always raises the prospect of a possible day in the Mountains of Snowdonia and today was no exception.  I'd had my eyes on the Minffordd trail route up Cadair Idris for some time.  I stayed at its foot in the Gwesty Minffordd Hotel last February en route between Bangor University and the Millennium stadium and looked nostalgically at the mountain as I set off that morning.  Now that was in the days of my obeseness, although I had started the take on long distance walking again but in the softer south.  But do do...

By Dave Snowden  ·  February 17, 2014  ·  Walks & Bike rides

Last month I had to alter my long standing plan to walk around Wales this year to accommodate the storm damage on the Anglesey Coast.  It means I will now head down the border on the Offa's Dyke path (red on the map) before taking a clockwise route around the coast finishing by following the River Dee from its mouth to source (yellow).

The year is significant for several reasons.  It is my 60th Birthday and the tenth anniversary of my leaving IBM to create Cognitive Edge.  It also the tenth anniversary of the deal of parents....

I had planned to announce the first part of my Round Wales at 60 walk today covering the North Wales Coast and Anglesey.  Detailed planning of the various stages meant that I had already cut out the From the source of the Dee section as I realised some sections of the walk would not allow a nineteen mile a day average to be maintained and 60 days seemed realistic for the coastal path but I would have to add another ten for Offa's Dyke.  Not real issue there, the 60@60 was always a bit artificial and the idea was to enjoy this, and...

Cwm Sere Ridge

By Dave Snowden  ·  January 19, 2014  ·  Walks & Bike rides

My original plan for today was to Head for Glyntawe and complete a 14 mile circuit of Sinc Giedd and Bannau Sir Gaer but the friendly publican at the Hendrewen Hotel really wanted breakfast to be at 0900.  That would mean I would get off at around 1100 and the last time I did that on a shorter walk I ended up descending in the dark.  I really need to keep the resolve of finding impersonal places to stay when I want an early start!   Mind you I recommend the place.  I plan to go back if only to walk the valley in which it is...
