Great is the power of steady misrepresentation

By Dave Snowden  ·  December 11, 2013  ·  Cynefin

I promised yesterday to clarify some aspects of Cynefin.  This was triggered by Roger's Linked In post and some of the response (reported yesterday) but it is not a specific response.  Rather see it as a summary of multiple responses both articulated or otherwise over the last few years.  To make something very clear up front; the fact that Cynefin has been taken up and used by many people is a source of considerable pleasure to me and I do my best not to get too precious.   To the best of my knowledge I have only had to get...

Language is the master of man

By Dave Snowden  ·  December 10, 2013  ·  Cynefin

There is an interesting phenomena at the moment in that various people are trying to define themselves either by, or against Cynefin.  It's an indication (citations are another) of the growing use of Cynefin within both academic and practitioner fields.  On the negative side the reaction seems to be either sycophancy or jealousy, which are best ignored or dismissed.  I attempted the latter yesterday with someone whose capacity to for self delusion and basic lack of basic integrity, let alone business sense, has been a major...

The thing which took the...

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 4, 2013  ·  Cynefin

In this continued series on the Cynefin domain models we now come to Simple, which leave Complex and a more general overview of the cylinder overlapping of all four (thus including disorder) to go.  That you may get over the weekend or in a weeks time depending on internet access at the villa on the Tuscany/Umbria border where I will be holidaying with family next week.

Simple tool some effort to put together as give the overlapping nature, with step changes all the labels had to be reversed and the whole position v complex took a...

Context & Cynefin

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 3, 2013  ·  Cynefin

Before moving on to the Simple Domain model I wanted to say a little bit more about the purpose and evolution of the domain models as a whole. I also want to make a more general point about frameworks and models in the context of a key word scaffolding.   At this stage you might want to take a break and listen to a TedX talk by Ann Pendleton-Jullian who makes a series of important points relating to networks and scaffolding.  We have been talking and working together for a few years now since we met at a Highland Forum meeting, and...
