Across the Universe

One of the advantages of traveling a lot  is that you often end up watching outstanding films that you would otherwise miss.  I flew out to Washington today by way of Raleigh from Gatwick (my loyalty to American Airlines is restored by the way hence the indirect route).  I watched the Jane Austin Book Club first which ain't bad although if you were a Jane Austin fan you would get more out of it.  I rate Austin as marginally better than Dickens who I despise and not on a par with Thackerey and Trollop by the way if we are moving...

In praise of Librarians

You know I really love the blogosphere, I had no idea when I started 18 months ago just how much of a productivity tool it would be. To take just one example; last week I was told by several people in no uncertain terms, that I needed to provide a summary of some of the main blogs and other material from this blog's history for new readers. I was starting to think about how to do that, then low and behold along comes Library Clips and does it for me. Not only that but with some interesting commentary and links to other blogs thrown...

Treat all journalists with extreme caution

I was pleased to see my cynicism about the Guardian "science correspondent" picked up by people who know far more about these sort of experiments than I do. See here for a well written account of the experiment, and the limits of the conclusions that can be drawn.

A shift in the wind?

It is reported that one in six of US laptop sales was an Apple this June on NPD sales (retailers). Its overall market share at 5.6% (taking into account direct channels etc) put it in joint third place. My impression is that it has replaced the Thinkpad as the quality laptop of choice. I am one of those who still think IBM made a major overall branding mistake in disposing of its interests here. In hindsight I think that decision will be seen as one of process based, reductionist analysis overcoming sound holistic business...

It's only a few weeks to go until the first anniversary of this blog, and today saw comment number 1000 from Dave Davison to my salivating post on the iPhone. It starts Dave, here is what I thought about the iPhone ....

Thanks to everyone who has contributed comments todate. With 360 postings (this will be 361) I've managed over one a day (nothing like creating a routine) with an average of between two to three comments per blog. It's the comments and the links that make it all worth while. There will be a "most popular blogs"...
