Return to Africa

By Dave Snowden  ·  October 16, 2013  ·  Great places

The last time I spoke to Henley Management School it was on the banks of the River Thames.  This evening it was in the Paulshof suburb of Johannesburg to the background accompaniment of a dramatic thunderstorm.    It has been too long since I was last in South Africa and a lot has changed for both good and bad.  The Gautrain is one of the good.  Straight out of the customs hall, up an escalator and then less than half an hour later I am greeting Sonja in Centurion.  My first (of three) guest houses on this trip is the Leopardsong...

Cycles of ‘changes’

By Dave Snowden  ·  October 15, 2013  ·  Diabetes, Trivia

A couple of weeks ago I realised that I was going to run out of clothes shortly.  Weight loss means that the classic trousers falling down sketch from Brian Rix et. al is becoming a cyclical experience.  I am now down to 96kg over 21kg lost since May with another 14kg to go.  One of the consequences of this is that I have been moving through my wardrobe.  Here my squirrel tendencies have come into their own and I have been taking down clothes stored in the loft every few weeks.  It means that as of a week or so ago I was wearing a...

The last three days have been bonus time with my trip to Tampa cancelled thanks to the impasse in the US Government (although I am not sure governance has anything to do with it).  I couldn't make that much use of them as I didn't know until late Friday.  I did manage to book myself a ticket for the opening Blues Heineken  match at Exeter which was a mistake (and no I don't want to talk about it yet) which took out most of Sunday.  I thought of taking the bike out on Saturday but by the time I had caught up on sleep, handled the...

Musing on pendulums

By Dave Snowden  ·  October 11, 2013  ·  Musings

A long drive last night from Cardiff to Shipley to spend the morning with Yorkshire Water in support of Jon Kendall of  Castleton Consulting one of our long standing network partners.  I've come to know the people there over the years as well over various projects and events so it was a meeting up of old friends as well as finding some new ones. The meeting showed the value of building long term relationships as some ideas (and too many of mine) take time to gestate and gain acceptance.

One of the issues that came up is the...

Lost not found interlude

By Dave Snowden  ·  October 10, 2013  ·  Trivia

I made the mistake of leaving my iPad in the seat on the flight from Frankfurt this morning which messed up my presentation for the Welsh Government that afternoon.   It was already a tight timescale so after we landed I moved at speed to leave the plane and it wasn't till I was at the bus stop that I realised I had left it there.  It was doubly frustrated as I had almost packed it before landing on the basis I might forget to pick it up.   OK it is at the end of its life span and I was thinking of carrying it less now I have the...
