Umbria: Assisi

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 11, 2013  ·  Great places

The holiday is settling into a routine now.  Every evening over a meal the whole party vow to get up early in the morning and there are various commitments to match my endeavours in the swimming pool.  Then I wake up around 0600, clear some key email until the sun rises and then head for the swimming pool.  Five damp hand marks on five stone liners ensure the fully fifty lengths are complete and I then make the first coffee of the morning, have breakfast and read until the masses assemble.  Then there is a negotiation and finally...

Umbria: Gubbio

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 10, 2013  ·  Great places

Well my resolution to convert my owls to larks failed miserably but I was compensated by having the swimming pool to myself in the early hours.  After clearing the various dead insects (a remarkable variety) I had a relaxing 50 lengths or so, counting is difficult when distracted, without company.  By midday my frustration levels were building but I finally persuaded the party that a trip to Gubbio would constitute a good afternoon's trip.  Even then it took an hour to assemble people and get on the road.  The approach to what is...

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 8, 2013  ·  Cynefin

Today was a rest and relaxation day here in Tuscany.  I went for a swim at 0700, few others saw the light of day for several hours. Aside from a brief shopping trip and taking a millimetre or two of one tyre of the van getting it out of a tight situation its all being peaceful.  If got a lot of reading done, cleared some emails and then settled down to complete the v45º domain models.   The complex one is re-produced below but other than some very minor changes remains stable bar the 45º reorientation.

The thing which took the...

Tuscany: arrival

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 7, 2013  ·  Great places

I made the flight to Milan from Zurich and the rest of the family and friends achieved the same result from Gatwick.  Behind that simple statement lies a lot of worry and organisation but we made it, picked up the nine seater van (I am a white van driver for the week with all that might imply) and headed down the A8 to Tuscany.  The only thing which went wrong was the absence of an audio socket, so my downloading of the Radio 4 version of His Dark Materials was wasted and we were limited to Italian Radio.  It's a long and...
