I♥NY but ...

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 30, 2013  ·  Great places

I've always had a sort of love-hate relationships with big cities, in particular London and New York.   I don't think I could live in them, but I feel a constant drawer to visit.  Not just for the opera and theatre, although that is a major part of the attraction, but for a wider aesthetic purpose.  One of the things I love about New York is the constant contrast between decay and rebirth.   I was at a meeting today with FlickerLab, brokered by Caitlin of Starlight Runner with whom I have yet not to have an interesting conversation...

A spin around the Apple

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 29, 2013  ·  Great places

By flying to New York on Saturday I saved around a grand on the fare which more than covers the extra hotel night and gave me Sunday to adjust to the timezone.  Now for most the past decade I would simply have tuckered down in my room and cleared email all day, summoned room service for a Burger and maybe go for a short walk.  The new regime (weight loss since May now 19kg and counting) will not permit that so after a morning of work I headed into New York by way of the Long Island Rail Road, walked down to the Hudson and hired a...

Tuscany: the final day

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 14, 2013  ·  Great places

I'd decided some time ago that I didn't want to have to pack up and then dash north to get a plane.  So I booked a hotel by the airport to allow a final day.   We headed back past Siena repeating yesterday's journey but then moved into country lanes to San Gimignano which is (rightly) the picture postcard hill town. The whole place lived up to its reputation including the mass of tourists and locals....

Tuscany: Siena

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 13, 2013  ·  Great places

I finally got everyone up early enough to have a full day in Siena which was one of the highlights of the holiday.  A longish drive but the sat nav took us over a mountain route and then back along a fast route so that worked well.  Parking worked well but I then discovered that I had left the battery for the Nikon in its charger which was a pain so I had to fall back to the Sony.  I've be blogging on the plus and minus features of both at some stage in the future but the downside today was that the ISO range is not as good and it...

Umbria: Lago Trasimeno

By Dave Snowden  ·  September 12, 2013  ·  Great places

The St Francis theme is difficult to escape.  Gubbio has the legend of him converting a wolf, Assisi is well Assisi and today's venue includes the island where there was some complex conversation with a fish.  Again the party was not complete with my wife staying back but the destination might have offered water sports and if not looked interesting so we set off and followed one of those wonderful winding mountain roads in Italy, each turn of which reveals another spectacular hill top town.  We passed the site of Hannibal's massacre...
