Otford to Bundeena

By Dave Snowden  ·  June 16, 2013  ·  Great places

After far too long I finally got to do a long distance walk today after a month of travel with little free time.   I'd also forgotten to pack any walking gear which created a conundrum last week.  Normally I might just have bought something, but the rapid weight loss means I really don't want to waste money so aside from lightweight walking trousers and decent walking shoes (although not boots) I ended up managing the whole day with the iPad bad stuffed with water bottles and a semi-smart jacket.  I did buy a head torch as insurance...

Rock and Roll

By Dave Snowden  ·  June 15, 2013  ·  Great places

So to the end of a productive week in Melbourne, after a gentle start life became hectic with a four day course and two academic presentations plus important meetings over dinner.   There is something about that sort of pace which improves presentation delivery.  Using the same material to different audiences over a compressed timescale is rather like the twice cooked style so beloved of asian cooking; it improves the flavour.   By the time I came to the Melbourne Emergence Group  (I was a founder member many years ago but this was...

The Chaotic domain

By Dave Snowden  ·  June 14, 2013  ·  Cynefin

So in the last in this series of updates we move to the chaotic domain.  As I have previously explained at length, chaos is a transitionary state difficult to maintain for any length of time.  Constrains of some type come naturally.  However used properly this is space of what I have called eureka innovation, to contrast with incremental innovation.  It is also the domain where we can introduce distributed decision making but that is for another day.

Like the simple domain described yesterday, the chaotic one is only valid in the...

The Simple Domain

By Dave Snowden  ·  June 13, 2013  ·  Cynefin

So moving on from yesterday we come to the Simple Domain.  I normally present this with a Gaping Void cartoon which says Boring and unsexy for a reason which certainly applies here.  It's not a bad domain per se, but then that is true of every Cynefin domain.   But it is a bit different from complicated and complex in that the line of coherence is treated differently.  Here its OK to move up and down towards the top right of the bottle, but the bottom left is the domain of complacently, of a sudden unexpected and precipitous...

The complicated domain

By Dave Snowden  ·  June 12, 2013  ·  Cynefin

Part of the new training programme is a day two focus on Cynefin and the sub-domain models.   I've previously posted on these, but they have been in a state of evolution that will continue for a bit.   As is Cynefin itself although that is fairly stable now.  Today in Melbourne I taught them all and finally sorted out a problem with the axes on the complicated one and completed (after the training itself) the shift of all of them away from ambiguous circles to a more structured use of the three by three.   The complex domain model...
