State of the Net 2013

By Dave Snowden  ·  May 31, 2013  ·  Conference blogs, Musings

I enjoyed my keynote at State of the Net 2013 here in Trieste, mind you I enjoyed it last year as well.  A chance to talk about big issues in society and argue for humans at the front, humans at the end which is one of my current slogans for the goal of SenseMaker®.  Using technology to augment and scale human endeavour rather than attempting to attempt to poorly replace it.   I'm also talking about post-big-data in the sense of what we do when we get past the current hype.  I started the whole thing by pointing out that I have seen...

It’s 42 now ask a different question

By Dave Snowden  ·  May 30, 2013  ·  Great places

Up bright and early this morning to be dumped on the outskirts of Swindon for the Coach to Heathrow.   I start this week in Trieste for the State of the Net event I spoke at last year.  The video of my keynote there is one of the most popular so I have much to live up to.   After that its Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok  before the best part of two weeks in Australia with a possible side trip to New Zealand.  And before anyone says it I will be home before the first Lions test and the only match I have any chance of seeing if I can...

HTLGI2013 The Devil’s Work

By Dave Snowden  ·  May 28, 2013  ·  Thinking events

Michael Foley again (Lord preserve us) but better this time when he had to interact rather than preach.  We also had Godfrey Barker who has a charming belief in British values that does not match reality but some very interesting things to say about Golden Ages and how we live in them and what happens later (spoiler alert its bad).  The real star here was Frank Field who is a deep thinker and connected to the reality of the constituents he represents.  He makes the valid point that the Labour Party is no longer a mass party, but a...

HTLGI2013 Extraordinary?

By Dave Snowden  ·  May 28, 2013  ·  Thinking events

I got the wrong Micael Foley when I booked this.  I thought I was getting the historian not a former IT lecturer at a Polytechnic turned University who wants to talk praising the ordinary and made too many jokes about sex with minors for my taste - they were clearly jokes but ...   Either way he is selling some books by not saying anything of substance, but saying it well with a lovely irish accent.  I wonder if he really takes his ideas seriously or if he has just caught onto something that sells.  I do know his references to...
