CASinGov 2: being & believing

By Dave Snowden  ·  November 30, 2012  ·  Reflections

When I said that this series would be two or more posts I don't think I realised what I was getting myself into, so I have created a sort of hashtag aspect to the title that I will retrofit and use in future to aid search.  I have a paper from Peter Ho given at a Future of Government conference earlier this year to respond to, thoughts from discussions in Adelaide and elsewhere about how complexity theory should inform the electoral process and various other subjects to discuss.  My aim is to pick them all up over the holiday period...

CASinGov 2: opening thoughts

By Dave Snowden  ·  November 29, 2012  ·  Polemic, Reflections

I made a promise yesterday to talk more about the questions posed by the Auditor General and to do so is probably more than one post.  It is also an issue of major importance.  The expectations of the welfare state are suffering in health, education and many other areas at the moment and the full effect of cutbacks has not yet been felt.  It is at least a possibility that we may be facing not a reduction in some services in the UK but the whole scale removal of many of them.

By Dave Snowden  ·  November 28, 2012  ·  Musings

I had too much good champagne on the flight back last night.  Every now and then I end up on a Singapore Airlines Flight where a good friend of Felix (husband of our administrator Dawn) is in charge of the crew at which point the level of care goes up a notch or two.  An impromptu tasting of different types of bubbly and my customary G&T and I was in no condition to do other than sleep.  Now that was not my plan, I had intended to stay up for 4-5 hours to work then, sleep to aid the time adjustment but temptation is as temptation...

Midnight, boarding a plane again

By Dave Snowden  ·  November 27, 2012  ·  Trivia

So yesterday I landed in Singapore and I'm now in the lounge ready to fly back to the UK and a frantic drive down the M4 to Cardiff for a WAO event.  The day went well, a good presentation, commitment to moving forwards and an outstanding lunch followed by an evening meal with those members of the team who had not beat a hasty retreat to their beds to catch up on the sleep deprivation of the weekend.  The project is the biggest in our history as a company and this first stage was important to say the least so I'm pleased to say we...

Sunrise landing in Singapore

By Dave Snowden  ·  November 26, 2012  ·  News

I landed in Singapore this morning a couple of weeks after I left it.  Sunrise over the wing was spectacular and I broke the rules by using the iPhone to capture it - in my defence it was in airplane mode.  I went from a sodden, flooded and cold Britain to the monsoon season with torrential rain and humidity.   I've done a few of these trips over the years.  Angelina, Zhen, Jules & Laurie had worked over Sunday to analysis a whole batch of stories that have been gathered and scrubbed over the previous two weeks.   I had to run a...
