Thrice given presentations

By Dave Snowden  ·  August 30, 2012  ·  Musings

Twice cooked pork is one of my favourite dishes in Singapore and it serves as a metaphor for todays somewhat frantic schedule.  This trip to New Zealand has been strange.  I come less often than I would like so there tends to be little time free.  However on this trip various things went wrong with notifications to key people and the time I had reserved for Wellington was not needed.   Downside, I didn't get to be a part of the best café culture in the world, upside I got some of the backlog of work cleared.  Wednesday and Thursday...

Rotate 45 degrees and think anew

By Dave Snowden  ·  August 29, 2012  ·

Regular readers of this blog will know that Cynefin and its domains are going through a period of flux at the moment.  It coincides with a lot of teaching, but also with practice.  Its going to carry on for a month or so then I will consolidate the material.  For the moment all contributions and thoughts are much appreciated.

A rugby interlude

By Dave Snowden  ·  August 26, 2012  ·  Rugby

A busy but brief visit to Melbourne came to and end today with a morning flight to Auckland.  Even then we managed to fit in a breakfast meeting with a student before grabbing a taxi to the airport.  I had forgotten to warn Michael that Air New Zealand, while very nice are sticklers for the rules so he didn't have a print of his ticket to prove he was not planning to illegally settle there.  But we got through that, with good humour however.

Now it occurred to me after (honestly it was after) the schedule for this trip was...

Simplicity after understanding

By Dave Snowden  ·  August 24, 2012  ·  Reflections

I'm not a huge fan of De Bono but one quote from him is just perfect: Simplicity before understanding is simplistic; simplicity after understanding is simple.   Far too many people render complex ideas simplistic in a well meaning attempt to simplify them without taking people through a process of understanding.  I can see why people do this for marketing purpose although I am not a fan of it.  Over the years I've seen no end of people attempt to hitch a lift onto things they only partly understand by making the claim that they are...
