Penultimate: forget cultural change

By Dave Snowden  ·  December 30, 2010  ·  Polemic

201012302312.jpg Yesterday I argued that compatible but different cultures had more resilient than a "common culture". Having tackled one of the shibboleths of OD and HR practice I thought I would move onto another namely cultural change. Of course the two ideas are linked and are all part of the idealism that characterises far too much management practice. You know how it runs, a group of senior executives go off site with some expensive management consultants. They assemble a set of platitudes that they think describe an idea future state they...

The last thing you want is a common culture

By Dave Snowden  ·  December 30, 2010  ·  Polemic

201012302125.jpg Culture is one of the most abused words on the OD lexicon and one of the most common mistakes is to assume that if an organisation has a common culture it is necessarily a good thing. Part of the problem here is that people confuse different with incompatible. The latter is obviously a bad idea as the focus will be on internal conflict rather than external achievement. I took this picture from the start point of the ridgeway today into the setting sun with the new Nikon 7000 (which is wonderful new toy). There are a host on the flicr stream but I have also loaded the telephot view that picks out the steeple of East Kennet Church looking up to Wansdyke into the sun. The shadows were near perfect although it tool time to position to steeple into the gaps between them

Today I picked up the Turkey, sausage meat (wild boar), bacon and black pudding from the Butcher at 0700. Into Waitrose at 0800 for vegetables, dairy and alcohol then home to unpack. Dentist for six monthly checkup at 1030. Short drive to catch 1136 train from Bedwyn to London. Bus to Bond Street and then transit via Piccadilly through Oxford Street picking up presents. Bus to Foyles to fill in the gaps then home...

Those mugs

By Dave Snowden  ·  December 24, 2010  ·  Trivia

DSCN0712.JPGA flurry of work this afternoon and the Starbucks mug collection is now fully displayed. Having done that I now realise I have limited capacity for expansion, so that means more work on shelves over the Christmas break. In addition I will probably get into an obsessive compulsive mode and get them organised by longitude within continent.

The other big holiday task (other than accounts, articles, the book, reading, playing with the new camera and general work) is to get the whole Science Fiction collection into Bookpedia. That will...
